Description:

Western Asia, Persia (Iran), Sari area, ca. 9th to 10th century CE. A lovely ceramic bowl, with steep sides and a small foot, glazed and decorated with black and brown manganese-based pigment to create abstract geometric patterns around a large pseudo-Kufic inscription on the interior. The exterior is glazed creamy white. Nishapur, located on the plateau at the center of Iran, was a seat of governmental power in the medieval Islamic world as well as a great trading city along the Silk Road until it was completely destroyed by the Mongols in 1221. Their pottery is some of the most unique and beautiful we see from this time period. Size: 7.2" W x 2.6" H (18.3 cm x 6.6 cm)

This style of bowl is known as "Sari ware", referring to the town of Sari in northern Iran where the first known examples were found. Today we also know that they were produced around the Gorgan area. It is known for its shades of brown palette.
