Description:

Central Asia, Indus Valley, Harappan / Mohenjo-Daro civilization, ca. 2700 to 2000 BCE. A hand-built, near-miniature terracotta bull figure with a rounded head, large horns, a pointed nose, four pointed feet, a striped body, and a dark yoke/collar. The giant target-shaped eyes give this example a delightful appearance. The lovely creature is additionally adorned with stripes along its back and horns, as well as a singular band around its neck. The hump on the bull's back symbolized power, strength, virility, and the animal's role as a leader of the herd. Bulls were a significant symbolic animal in this civilization's iconography, and were revered for their great spiritual purpose. Size: 3.625" L x 1.75" W x 2.375" H (9.2 cm x 4.4 cm x 6 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired 2002; ex-Ibrahimi collection, Los Angeles, California, USA
