Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumba Island, ca. mid-20th century CE. A woven ikat textile known as a hinggi, crafted from dyed cotton fibers in rich hues, traditionally used by men as a shoulder or hip garment. This hinggi is composed of two separate panels seamed together vertically down the center, with a woven border just above the fringe, known as a kabakil. Dyed with indigo and kombu, the symmetrical design consists of stylized human figures, reptiles, and zoomorphic creatures. Prominently depicted are two large human figures, each holding a creature in their hands, with smaller figures on their chests. The textile is bordered with a decorative band known as a kabakil, used to secure the warp, and is finished with a fringe. Traditionally, hinggi motifs conveyed the wearer's social status, served as formal attire, and were also used in burial practices. Size: 88" L x 38" W (223.5 cm x 96.5 cm)
