Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Bali/Java, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A stringed instrument known as a rebab, crafted from lathe-turned wood, animal bladder skin (likely bovine), textiles, and metal wire strings. The hollowed, bowl-shaped resonating chamber is covered with bladder skin and rests on a spindle-shaped leg. It is adorned with decorative red and brown velvet textiles with yellow fringe, and the back flap features a small sewn pocket. The long neck has two tuning pegs for the metal strings, and the spire-shaped finial resembles a stupa, adding religious connotations. The rebab is considered spiritually significant, often used in traditional Indonesian orchestras and sometimes in healing rituals. Played upright with the spindle foot on the ground, the bow (not included) is drawn across the strings just above the soundbox. Size: 32.25" L x 16.5" W (81.9 cm x 41.9 cm)
