Indonesia, Java, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A finely carved and superbly painted dance mask depicting Dalem from Java. Dalem represents the popular king character in the classic Indonesian dance drama. This mask is of the highest quality, painted with elaborate gold, green, black, white, and pink hues on a turquoise colored ground. The artisan carved eye slits, nose and mouth perforations for the wearer. A mask of this supreme caliber was intended to be worn and "danced" by professionals of the most elite theater groups. Exquisite detail and so rare to find such excellent artistry! Size: 7-1/4"L x 6"W.
