Description:

South Asia, Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, ca. 1890 CE. An expressive cobra mask from Sri Lanka, formerly called Ceylon worn during the yakun natima (devil dance) ritual of Sri Lanka, a dance that is actually an extensive drama rather than a mere charade with the sole purpose of entertaining. Rather, the yakun natima is a meticulously articulated ritual with a history that extends far back into Sri Lanka's pre-Buddhist past. The ritual blends ancient Ayurvedic concepts exploring the causes of disease with clever psychological manipulation. It is a dance drama that lasts up to twelve hours, the piece replete with humor and ironically deep-rooted fear, with the underlying theme of healing. This particular devil mask is an older mask that was carved in high relief and painted in hues of yellow, black, peachy pink, and white. Clearly made for a performer, the mask has eye slits, nose and mouth perforations. Size: 9-1/4"L x 6"W.
