Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, possibly Yogyakarta, 18th century. Rare and early wooden kris (keris) handle in club-like form carved with mask of a demon on one side, its dramatic visage enlivened with wide almond shaped eyes framed by a grand unibrow or furrow and beneath, a long curled mustache above a toothy grin. The hairstyle is well outlined with a magnificent spiraled curl on each side of the visage. Floral pattern at each side of base. Custom stand. Size: 2" W x 4" H (5.1 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex- private collection of Ami Brown. Mr. Brown was the owner of the Coca Cola franchise in Israel and amassed a huge and very fine collection of Indonesian Kris's as well as other ethnographic and tribal arts. His collection numbered more than 3000 pieces with many on display during his life in the Ein Harod Museum of Art.
