Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. This vessel immediately catches the eye with its almost-comical zoomorphic handle and the bright white, pink, and blue hues of its stucco pigment. The body has an elongated, tapering form, with a thin handle that travels from the unpronounced rim to the lower body. At both points, it joins the body with whimsically-shaped legs terminating in paws with incised details. The long, thin tail of the animal extends from the base of the handle, while the head completes the wide-eyed, slightly-panicked-looking feline finial. The complex stucco pattern around the body has geometric steps, waves, snakes, and diamonds in pale and dark pink; on one side are pale blue and black lines. These are all on a white background. Imagine how bright this vessel must have looked when first made! Size: 4.85" L x 6.1" W x 6.45" H (12.3 cm x 15.5 cm x 16.4 cm)
