Description:

Central Asia, northeastern India/Burma, Naga people, ca. early 20th century CE. A large helmet made of iron and leather, with a wicker exterior rim wrapped around a black fur - probably wild boar - cone. Two cow horns project from either side of the helmet. Sewn onto the wicker is the upper portion of a Eurasian beaver skull. Wicker stretches over the broad nose of the skull. Dyed goat hair, black and red, is sewn onto the wicker on either side of the skull. Size: 14.5" W x 8.75" H (36.8 cm x 22.2 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.

The Naga people are a combination of tribes in northeastern India and northwestern Burma; during the time that this helmet was made, they still led a very traditional lifestyle and engaged in headhunting. During the great ritual occasions in their calendar, men and women dress in ceremonial clothing and ornaments, including helmets like this one.
