Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Inca, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery ritual watering vessel known as a paccha with a bulky trapezoidal body, a rounded but stable base, and a stepped upper platform upon which sits a stylized anthropomorphic trumpet player. Covered in brown and cream-hued pigment, the vessel body features a broad brown stripe as well as 5 abstract avian creatures in low relief, 1 on the front and a row of 4 on the verso. Beneath the verso of the body is a petite spout from a priest would pour water across the fields as a fertility ritual. The trumpet player sits with bent knees beneath a lengthy tunic while holding the mouthpiece of a trumpet to pursed lips; a cylindrical spout with a flared rim doubles as the musician's cap. Size: 5.1" W x 8.4" H (13 cm x 21.3 cm)
