Description:

Pre-Columbian, Inca, Peru, ca. 1400 to 1532 CE. A wonderful blackware pottery stirrup vessel featuring a whiskered jaguar perched upon a tiered, multi-level ovoid vessel body with a tail that becomes the angular handle of the piece, upon which a playful seabird has alighted and from which a tall cylindrical spout rises. All is rendered in rich blackware with a fine stone-polished, almost metallic appearance. Magnificent and replete with impressive artistry and meaningful iconography! Size: 3.5" W x 7.25" H (8.9 cm x 18.4 cm)

By the dawn of Inca reign, Peru had been the seat of outstanding pottery production for thousands of years. The Moche had developed the stirrup vessel to an artform full of expression and fascinating insight to the ancient Andean culture. The Inca followed in this tradition, and oftentimes advanced in technique and presented intriguing iconography. The iconography of this vessel is replete with layers of symbolism. In the Pre-Columbian world, birds, as creatures of the sky, were thought to serve as messengers between the deities, the ancestors, and humankind. The jaguar stood for power and might. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World.
