Description:

Pre-Columbian, Inca, Central Peru, ca. 1300 to 1500 CE. A skillfully mold-made polychrome deer effigy stirrup vessel, the body modeled in the form of a deer head with a substantial stirrup rising above and a concave foot below - all finely painted in red, cream, and black. The attention to detail is impressive; take note of the decorative muzzle over the deer's spotted snout. Revered for their nimble speed and quiet grace, deer were associated with stellar symbolism and played a recurring role in creation myths of many Pre-Columbian cultures. A striking piece, replete with impressive artistry and poignant symbolism! Size: 5.2" L x 4.3" W x 6.875" H (13.2 cm x 10.9 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: private Colgate, Wisconsin, USA collection acquired 1970s to 1990s; ex-private Andy Morrow collection
