Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Chancay, ca. 1200 to 1450 CE. A hollow-molded bichrome pottery figure of a female cuchimilco (also known as a "star-gazer") standing atop straight legs with upraised arms and cupped hands facing outward. Her visage presents with a mask over coffee bean eyes, a perky nose, a closed mouth, pierced ears presumably for suspending ornaments perhaps made from bird feathers shells, and face paint adorning the cheeks and chin, all topped by a crested headdress with a decorative band. Her body is delineated with nubbin breasts and female genitalia; most interestingly it is also covered with dot motifs or a dotted garment perhaps made from jaguar pelt, with an outlined collar, crossed sashes over her chest, ties outlining her pubic triangle, and leglets. Fingers and toes are nicely delineated as well. Size: 5.75" W x 8.75" H (14.6 cm x 22.2 cm)

Provenance: ex Lehr-Collection, Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany acquired around 1980
