Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast of Peru, Inca culture, ca. 1400-1500 CE. Stupendous Chancay bottle with globular body and long, narrow neck adorned with an agile jaguar figure climbing up the vessel. All is painted in a polychrome scheme of red, black and cream - fantastic geometric motifs surround the body in two registers and the coat of the jaguar comes to life with black zigzags and dots. In the valleys north of Lima, the Chancay artisans created ceramics that are quite distinctive in form and decoration. This bottle is a wonderful example of their artistry and technique! 5.25"W x 4.50"H (13.34 W x 11.43 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Estate of Dr. Marc Bernheim, NY.
