Description:

Pre-Columbian, Inca, Peru, ca. 1500 CE. A finely crafted polychrome pottery spouted vessel representing a llama / beast of burden. His saddlebags painted on in shades of brown and reddish highlights You can see that the llama is carrying a very heavy burden by the tongue hanging out the side of his mouth. These animals carried the most heavy of loads for the Incan armies over the Andes. The iconography of the llama is significant. The Inca did not have horses or cows. So llamas were the important animal high in the Andes mountains. IN addition to serving as beast of burden, llamas provided the Inca with wool, food, and a way to transport goods. Llamas were not worshipped; however, they were integral to their folklore. In fact, the Inca believed that once upon a time, llamas could talk. Size: 8"H x 7"W.
