Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A large intaglio, made of a beautiful translucent banded amber- and cream-colored piece of agate, with its flat face incised with a scene of two gods facing one another as if in conversation: Mercury and Fortuna. Fortuna, goddess of fortune and luck, stands contrapposto, wearing her distinctive crown. Mercury, the god of commerce, poetry, and travelers, faces her in profile, with his own distinctive headgear very apparent. Size: 0.95" W x 1.2" H (2.4 cm x 3 cm)
