Ancient Rome, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. This is a large and heavy high karat gold ring, inset with a carved intaglio depicting Leda and the swan. The story of Leda, although originally Greek, was popular in ancient Rome, yielding some beautiful monumental artwork like the statue held by the Getty Museum, and smaller everyday items like this one. Size: US ring size 10, weighing 15.5 grams.
