Oceania / Polynesia / Melanesia, Papua New Guinea, New Britain, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A dark palmwood war club in the form of a paddle, with one shorter end that resembles a handle and another that resembles the flattened end of a paddle. Lightly incised decorations cover both sides of the "handle" and the center and "paddle" of one side with abstract geometric and floral patterns, giving the impression of a long vine with few leaves upon it traversing up one side. Size: 3.55" W x 46.7" H (9 cm x 118.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection; ex-Ron Perry collection; Ron Perry collected art and artifacts for more than 40 years in New Guinea and the South Pacific. He collaborated with Carolyn Leigh to write a book entitled, "Art Dealer in the Last Unknown: Ron Perry & New Guinea Art: the early years 1964-1972" (2011)
