Description:

West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba people, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An interesting figural representation of Eshu, the Yoruba protector of travelers and the mediator between the physical and spiritual realms. The head of the figure is a stopper for a small wooden container beneath a thick wrapping of leather. Its face, slightly pinched with ambiguous facial features, displays a backswept coiffure colored in an azure-blue pigment; it has a desiccated leather strap wrapped around it. The exterior is lined with several columns of British West African one-tenth pennies secured by petite leather straps. Size (without top strap): 5.5" H (14 cm); size (with top strap): 9" H (22.9 cm).
