Sino-Tibet, Ca 19th century. One of the finest and most important Thangkas we have had the pleasure of presenting. Large painting of the "Thousand-Armed Bodhisattva" Avalokitesvara Sahasrabhuja who was a male deity in early Sanskrit but takes a female form in China during the Tang Dynasty. Painted on cloth; with eleven faces and a thousand arms, the first pair of hands are at the heart, with palms folded, the second right holds a rosary, the third eliminates the hunger and thirst of pretas, and the fourth holds a wheel, the second left holds a lotus, the third a water-pot, and the fourth a bow and arrow, the other radiating 992 hands are boon-granting, a deerskin covers his left breast and the lower part of his body is covered with fine silks, the central figure is surrounded by four attendant bodhisattvas, at top left is the Naropa Vajrayogini, at top right is white Vajrasattva, at bottom left is Manjushri, and at bottom right is Vajrapani in wrathful form. Exquisite example! Painted panel measures 24" by 16-1/2" with green cloth backing measuring 37-1/2" by 24." Custom framed, measuring 46" x 33." Cf.
