Tibet, Late 18th / early 19th century CE. A stunning Tibetan thangka depicting four Arhats, depicted in Mahayana Buddhism as the original followers of Buddha who have followed the Eightfold Path and attained the Four Stages of Enlightenment, accompanied by the blue figure of Vajrapani in his active warrior stance below, several other divinities in a landscape replete with green hills, bright flowers and blue waters below. In Theravada Buddhist traditions Arhats are regarded as a "perfected person" who has attained Nirvana. On other Buddhist traditions the term has been used for people far advanced along the path of Enlightenment but who have not reached full Buddha hood. Professionally framed, set within a mat of three beautiful textiles, the entire piece matted on museum-quality linen, and then enclosed within a stunning golen frame with museum-quality glass. Painting itself measures 19" x 13-3/4". With textile 23" x 42.5". In frame 49-1/2" x 32-1/2". Note: A very similar example, just a tad smaller, sold at Christies, London, Sale 5749, Lot 281, November 4, 2014 for $23,970.
