Description:

Africa, Nigeria, Igbo, ca. early 20th century. A striking mask, finely carved with small perky ears, long eye slits, a straight aquiline nose, an open mouth revealing delineated teeth, and grand whiskers, all beautifully painted in jet black and red upon the white visage. Masks like this example demonstrate the close relationships between humankind and the animal kingdom in Africa. The white complexion indicates that the animal represents a sacred spirit. Size: 11.5" L x 6.75" W x 6" H (29.2 cm x 17.1 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Adeon Gallery, Nick Poolos, Chicago, IL acquired before 1970.
