Description:

Early 20th century CE. Carved from a hard, dense, heavy wood, this old paddle-form ladle shows decades of use long after it had lost a few sections of the more delicate carving. The main, anthropomorphic face at the juncture of the handle and scoop section is that of an ancestor, put there to honor him/her. This helped establish the claims of a family in the community, impressing those who came to use the utensil as a functional object. A zoomorphic, possibly crocodilian, head, decorates the top end of the ladle, probably signifying a clan or lineage symbol. 31"L x 3-1/4"W. Provenance: Collected by Sava Maksic, early 1960's and purchased at Pacific Arts in NYC, ca. 1970. All items in this auction have been legally acquired, are legal to sell, and guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

  • Condition: Patina is deep and lovely. An excellent example.
