Description:

This ritually charged figure conservatively dates to the early 20th century. A fine, small example of the ingeniously abstracted, anthropomorphic figures created by the Moba people of northwestern Togo. This possibly female figure was once part of a personal shrine which all adults were encouraged to have for beneficial, protective reasons. These abbreviated, miniature versions of the larger, more detailed ancestor figures do not represent anyone in particular, but are considered to be the owner's connection to positive events and to God. Village diviners guide in the creation and precise use of such figures, which can range in height from under 10 inches to over 5 feet. This old and fine example measures 8"H x 2-1/4"W. The gentle sway creates a strong dynamic unexpected in such a minimal sculpture. It is covered with a thick, slightly encrusted sacrificial surface, overall. Provenance: Ex-M. Cichon Tribal Arts, FL.
