Description:

North America, ca. 1918 to 1920 CE. This is a dramatically large piece of trench art, made from an American Navy 3"/50 caliber shell stamped with "T.B. & C Co. 6-10-18 3 in 50 cal lot 1104" on the bottom. The art, added later, depicts the head and neck of a seven point elk with a scroll saying "BPOE" beneath it; above its head is a clock showing 11:00, presumably in reference to the end of WWI, "The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month". This piece of trench art has a very high level of detail, including fur on the elk and a decorative pyramid design around the bottom. This piece was made after the war, almost certainly by an American with loyalty to the Elks Lodge, a large American fraternal order founded in 1868. Size: 4.3" W x 23.75" H (10.9 cm x 60.3 cm).
