Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A huge, heavy bronze base composed of two pieces: a tall pole with a thin, slotted attachment for a lamp at one end and an evenly striated main body that slots into the socket at the center of the foot, and a tripod foot with each leg terminating in a strongly-depicted foot of a lion. The base was designed to hold a large oil lamp. An item like this would have been highly treasured by whomever owned it, and was probably a family heirloom. Size of pole: 14.75" L x 1" W (37.5 cm x 2.5 cm); size of foot: 12" W x 4.25" H (30.5 cm x 10.8 cm)

See a similar example of the foot from Christie's, which sold for approximately $3000 in 2012: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-roman-bronze-lamp-stand-base-circa-5609711-details.aspx
