Lot 38
Italy, Etruscan culture, ca. 768 to 264 BCE. A large, fired red clay pottery pithos (large storage container) with a stamped geometric, raised pattern, a wide neck, and a rolled rim. This was made to be used for bulk storage, usually of liquid or grains. Many pithoi were made to be stored in a subterranean situation, dug into the ground, and thus did not have to stand on their own; however, this one was clearly made to stand alone, based on its flat foot and the fact that its decorations cover its entire body. These pleasing designs suggest that this was not just a utilitarian object, but probably displayed in a domestic or shop setting. Size: 14" W x 16.25" H (35.6 cm x 41.3 cm)
