Pre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle, Macaracas type, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. An enormous pottery bowl of hemispherical form with a rounded but relatively stable base as well as a rim that hangs over the deep basin. Across the cream-hued exterior is a dense register of linear groupings, curvilinear motifs, and abstract saurian creatures with serpentine bodies. Size: 14.25" L x 14.75" W x 9.125" H (36.2 cm x 37.5 cm x 23.2 cm)

Provenance: Estate of Peter H. Tillou Collection, thence by descent. Acquired in the 1990s, collection # 249. Appraised for $9,600 by Marianne Huber in 2014.
