Description:

Near East, Central Iran, Chalcolithic period, ca. 3800 to 3700 BCE. A fascination with wild animals bearing features like these magnificent horns is evident in ancient Near Eastern art of virtually all periods, dating all the way back to the Neolithic period. A thin-walled bi-chrome masterwork of early pottery of a conical form with a dimpled pointed bottom, the upper two-thirds of the vessel depicting four male mouflons (types of wild sheep native to the highland regions of the Near East) painted dark chocolate brown against a buff background. Each mouflon is placed in the center of a large panel in silhouette facing right with grand horns curved in almost a full revolution, standing on an even groundline. The panels are divided by zones of repeated horizontal striations and all is underscored by several thin bands. A similar example depicting ibexes residing in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Purchase, Joseph Pulitzer Bequest, 1959, 59.52) is published in the Metropolitan Museum of Art Guide by former director Philippe De Montebello (1994, p. 46). Size: 12.125" W x 10.25" H (30.8 cm x 26 cm)
