Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, Iron Age II, ca. 8th century BCE. A hand-built buffware pottery vessel called a krater amphora with an apple-shaped body, a squat foot, a pair of handles arching between the thick rim and rounded shoulder, and a squat neck. Krater amphorae were oftentimes used in the ancient Greek world as a means of combining water and wine to create a less alcoholic beverage that could be consumed for hours (if not days) on end. Examples of this size are of far greater rarity than their more-petite counterparts, making an intact vessel like this one exceedingly scarce! Size: 12.5" L x 13.4" W x 14.125" H (31.8 cm x 34 cm x 35.9 cm)

Provenance: private Owen collection, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA, acquired in the 1990s from a US-based dealer
