Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River region, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An enormous mask with a framework of woven reeds and draped raffia strands. The front of the mask displays an abstract avian figure in relief with a flowing comb and wattle, a pair of openwork eye holes, a column of projecting feathers down the middle, and an attached fiber beak. The periphery of the wooden face is lined with tufts of soft grey chicken feathers, and a pair of lengthy wooden poles stabilize the mask. Size: 23" W x 64" H (58.4 cm x 162.6 cm).

Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
