Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Abelam tribe from the Maprik/Wosera area, ca. mid 20th century CE. Carved from the thigh bone of a huge cassowary bird, this is a spoon with the natural contours of the joint used as a handle and the tip of the shaft excavated to form a scooping surface. It would have been used for dividing and holding small amounts of materials used for ceremonial drinks and preparations. Size: 1.8" W x 14.05" H (4.6 cm x 35.7 cm)
