Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Lower Sepik River, ca. early 20th century CE. A lovely carved wood dance wand with openwork motifs long its length. The majority of the wand is an openwork ovoid, with a small handle integrated into its base. A human figure, nude and with a visible phallus, stands below an arrow and a diamond, surrounded by geometric motifs. Dance wands like this one are carried by young men during dances and performances that have symbolic power, especially relating to the agricultural cycle, in the life of their villages. Size: 4.65" W x 31.25" H (11.8 cm x 79.4 cm); 31.75" H (80.6 cm) on included custom stand.
