Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A hefty cast-iron axe head comprised of a rectangular flat-topped socketing shaft with a thick butt, a sturdy neck, and a broad blade which droops downward towards the outer edge. This axe was most likely intended for utilitarian purposes, such as chopping and shaping wood or mud bricks. However, it could also double as a throwing instrument or weapon for hand-to-hand combat when in battle. Lustrous deep sepia and russet hues envelop the weapon's exquisite form, leaving only one way to describe it: "simply striking". Please note, the Lucite stand in photos is not included. Size: 7" L x 5" W x 1.5" H (17.8 cm x 12.7 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000
