Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A hand-built drinking vessel known as a kero (also quero) in the shape of a right foot with a dramatically flared shin that doubles as the walls and rim. The vessel rests atop a broad foot with delineated toes and black-painted linear tattooing around the peripheries, heel, and two outer toes. Smoothed via stone burnishing, the exterior walls are decorated with two rectangular boxes - each containing segmented and zigzagging bars - in hues of black, cream, and brick-red atop the burnt sienna ground. The interior surfaces also bear hues of sienna and citrine with a faint maroon ring encircling the top. Size: 4" W x 4.8" H (10.2 cm x 12.2 cm)

  • Condition: Possible repairs to upper interior rim as evidenced by adhesive residue and small copper fleck in two petite spalls. Possible retooling to toes. Minor abrasions to painted surfaces and light encrustations between toes. Great preservation to pigment throughout.
