Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A whimsical hand-built pottery vessel in the form of a feline head featuring a circular base, a wide prominent neck, and playfully painted facial characteristics in hues of red, cream, and black. Its visage is comprised of a delineated snout that leads into arched brow lines accenting wide elliptical eyes. Its mouth highlights bared teeth with linear and triangular incisions – marked with a pair of painted whiskers on each side of its snout. The feline appearance is completed by a pair of spotted tab-form ears set on opposing sides of its head. A truly wonderful example with a creative flare! Size: 6.4" W x 6.5" H (16.3 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-Stein collection, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, USA, acquired in 2008; ex-Art of the Andes
