Middle East, Holy Land, Samaria, ca. 1600 BCE. Ceramic Holy Land pitcher with tall neck and large tapering handle, and small foot. Remains of painted red geometric pattern on body. The vessel is signed, dated, and location identified by Moshe Dayan, the legendary and quite unconventional Israeli military leader who served as the Defense Minister during the Six-Day War. Dayan was an amateur archaeologist who amassed an exceptional collection of Holy Land antiquities. His collection was featured in a landmark exhibition at the Israel Museum in 1986. A beautiful form with an elegant silhouette and striking painted designs. 5.00"W x 8.25"H (12.70 W x 20.96 H cm) Provenance: Ex-Private Santa Barbara collection; Moshe Dayan private collection, acquired in mid-1970s.
