Description:

Native American, North America, southern Arizona, Hohokam culture, ca. 150 CE - 1150 CE. According to archaeologist Emil Haury, the Hohokam were "masters of the desert". Indeed Hohokam culture evolved in the deserts of southern Arizona and extended southward into northern Mexico and as far as Flagstaff. It seems these peoples were influenced by the Mesoamerican peoples to the south. They constructed platform mounds and ball courts for ritual activities. In order to survive the extreme desert conditions, they lived along river drainages and pioneered irritation systems. hohokam pottery was painstakingly handbuilt using the paddle-and-anvil technique. This example is striking for its unusually tall neck and stunning coloration with lovely smoke clouds. The smooth surface of this vessel is oftentimes referred to as "onion skin" inspired by the lustrous, natural hued skin of an onion. ~7-1/4"H x 6-1/4"D at widest Provenance: Ex-Hagen Collection, acquired in the 1940s, found on private land.
