Description:

Native American, North America, southern Arizona, Gila butte, Hohokam culture, ca. 150 CE - 1100 CE (larger vessel) and ca. 500 - 700 CE (smaller vessel). hohokam pottery was created via the paddle-and-anvil technique. Decoration typically consisted of red geometric designs, either banded or allover patterns of small repeated motifs. The more subtle striations on the surfaces of these vessels have inspired the term "onion skin" due to their smooth, lustrous "skin" resembling that of an onion. Note: the smaller of the pair manifests particularly lustrous stone polished surface and the larger shows stunning black markings as well. According to archaeologist Emil Haury, the Hohokam were "masters of the desert". Indeed Hohokam culture evolved in the deserts of southern Arizona and extended southward into northern Mexico and as far as Flagstaff. It seems these peoples were influenced by the Mesoamerican peoples to the south; they too constructed platform mounds and ballcourts for ritual activities. In order to survive the extreme desert conditions, they lived along river drainages and pioneered irritation systems. No one knows why or how the Hohokam disappeared. It is a mystery yet to be solved. Perhaps through their distinctive art forms archaeologists and art historians will reveal more about the Hohokam, Pima for "those who have vanished." ~8"H x 6-3/4"D at widest and ~5"H x 5-3/4"D at widest Provenance: Ex-Hagen Collection, acquired in the 1940s, found on private land.
