Description:

China, Han Dynasty, ca. 300-100 BCE. A graceful statue of a royal court lady, made from terracotta with remains of post fired colors still evident. Court lady statues were placed, often in groups, in the tombs of wealthy aristocratic women to act as "ladies in waiting" in the afterlife. This particular statue is very smartly turned out, as her mistress must have been. Her perfectly coiffed hair is pulled into a low knot at the nape of her neck, her long lavender robes fall gracefully across her lithe body, her hands are folded at her waist as she bows slightly. Her features are fine and beautiful, right down to her cherry red lips. A stunning work of art and fascinating illustration of ancient fashion. 13"H "One adorns the dead as though they were still living, and sends them to the grave with forms symbolic of life." - Xumzi, follower of Confucius. Provenance: ex-Splendors of the World, CA. • Condition: Surface wear, but generous remains of original color still visible. Firing hole at middle.
