Description:

Southern Europe, Hallstatt culture, ca. 8th to 7th century BCE. A beautiful bronze spectacle, or double spiral, fibula (brooch) comprised from a wire that was meticulously twisted in a rotational fashion to create this iconic pattern. The length of wire is tightly coiled in about ten revolutions at each end to create the two large spirals that sit opposite one another in an attractive symmetrical composition with a central raised loop. The surface has developed a lovely dark gray patina over the ages. The spectacle design was remarkably long-lasting, dating back to the 13th century BCE. Such fibulae have been found all over Southern Europe - mostly in the Balkans and south of the Danube and as far afield as Poland, Switzerland, and the western Mediterranean - often buried with their owners to accompany them in the afterlife. Size: 3" L x 1.6" W (7.6 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
