Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. A hand-carved greenstone figure of an intriguing form bearing delineated but simplified features, a definitive chin, incised toes, and drilled eyes, mouth, and raised nose. The profile is very rectangular, as if the artist did not finish rounding the edges like we see in most other Mezcala stone "axe god" figures. Perhaps this is a preform or unfinished type, however it is somewhat similar to the M-16 type described by researcher and author Carlo Gay. Figures like this one are deemed as 'axe gods' based on scholars' suppositions that they were carved from repurposed stone axe heads that had been damaged or otherwise unusable. Size: 1.5" L x 1.25" W x 2.5" H (3.8 cm x 3.2 cm x 6.4 cm); 5.75" H (14.6 cm) on included custom stand.
