Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A lovely head of a highly-abstract form, hand-carved from mottled sage-green stone with light inclusions. The minimalist head has shallow ovoid eyes, a bulbous nose above a rounded chin, puffy cheeks, and bar-shaped ears, all beneath a smooth forehead. Centered on the forehead is a biconically-drilled suspension hole which suggests this may have been used as a maskette for a deceased individual or worn by someone in the world of the living as a sizable pendant. Size: 4.6" W x 4.625" H (11.7 cm x 11.7 cm); 6.1" H (15.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Sydney Berman collection, New York, USA, collected from 1965-1990
