Central America, Guatemala, ca. 1940 CE. The bull is a popular subject of Guatemalan masquerades featured in the Torito (Little Bull) Dance, the Patzcar Dance, and others. This example is wonderfully hand carved and hand painted; the visage is quite fierce with incised flaring nostrils, gnashing teeth, and large glaring eyes; details are painted in red, black, and white. There are two holes through which the masquerader may see. The horns were carved separately and attached with nails. Perforation through forehead area as well as wired through sides for suspension.
