Description:

Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 3rd century BCE. A tall, charming, hollow, mold-made terracotta figure of a young man, nude aside from a rounded cap and a himation over one shoulder, standing and holding a small rabbit under one arm. There are traces of white and red pigment on the man's face and body, his himation, and the rabbit's body. The man stands atop an integrated plinth. Animal gifts were commonly given by older men to younger ones, and this figure may represent that practice, with its clear focus on the youth and slender athleticism of the subject. The rabbit was also sacred to the god Hermes, the messenger god, because it was known for being fleet of foot. A wonderful large and well-preserved votive statue! Size: 3.8" W x 13" H (9.7 cm x 33 cm)
