Description:

Ancient Art. Magna Graecia, South Italy, ca. 4th century BCE. A beautiful ceramic kothon (also called a plemochoe or exaleiptron) with a loop handle flanked by protruding pointed knobs just below the rounded rim, all on a ring base. Adding to its attractive form is the beautiful painted decorative program of black concentric circular bands on a on tawny beige ground as well as a target pattern on the underside of the base. Such vessels were essentially ancient air fresheners created to contain fragrant substances to imbue a space with sweet smelling aromas.
