Description:

Ancient Art. Magna Graecia, southern Italy, ca. 4th century BCE. A rarer form, the kalathos (meaning basket) is a pottery vessel with a shape akin to a top hat - its form comprised of a narrow base, cylindrical body, and flared rim - that was traditionally used to hold fruit or wool. It is often seen in painted pottery compositions to symbolize fertility and abundance. This example is decorated with bands and striations of black against a buff ground, with a band of frets adorning the rim. Very attractive! Size: 6.125" in diameter x 6.3" H (15.6 cm x 16 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
