Description:

Greece, Miletus (Miletos) Colony (present day Turkey), Archaic Period, ca. 6th century BCE. This silver coin is known as the twelfth stater / hemihekte / diobol, well struck in Miletus, Ionia. One side shows a dramatic, roaring lion head in profile and the back shows a symbol that resembles a starburst but in reality is unknown. The lion was the civic badge of Miletus. We believe that these coins were the most common currency of Western Anatolia during this period. Size: 0.4" W (1 cm)
