Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian period, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A pair of small mold-made Roman oil lamps. Both are redware, with no handles, flattened cylindrical bodies, small fill-holes in the center of small discuses, and an elongated spout. The decorative programs on each present complimentary knobby textures. One has a floral design, while the other may be a "frog" oil lamp in the style of ones held by the Louvre and the Science Museum in London. A lovely pair. Size: 3.4" L x 2.3" W x 0.9" H (8.6 cm x 5.8 cm x 2.3 cm)

The frog was a symbol of rebirth in Egypt from the pre-Dynastic period onward, and, later, was also identified with Heket, who was the goddess of birth and fertility and whose cult was associated with the city of Antinoe. These symbols were later adopted by Christians and placed onto lamps made under Christian influence, like this one.
