After the decisive battle of Pydna in 168 BCE, the Roman Republic consolidated its power over the Hellenistic world, ending the Antigonid line of kings that could be traced back to Alexander the Great. Rome divided up Macedonia into four regions, and withheld the right of coinage for ten years. This coin is from the period after that, when these regions were finally able to mint new coinage.
